Fear Not

People keep asking me how I am holding up these days. Our family has a few things on our plate: adopting a new daughter, moving back to the States, moving to a new city in the States, starting a new job. Oh in the midst of that, I am supposed to finish my PhD. We have a few things on our plate right now. So, how are we holding up? Well, to be honest, I think we are doing alright.

I Don't Belong Here

One of those funny things about doing a PhD is this feeling like you don’t belong. As soon as I got here, I talked to a number of colleagues and they all talked about feeling like an imposter. In fact, this phenomenon has been given the name ‘imposter syndrome’. To some degree every PhD student feels this at some point (or for the duration) of their program. Asking the question, ‘Do I belong here?’ Being convinced that everyone is smarter than you. Being afraid that you will be found out that you are a fake.

Fear and Shame

We are afraid that by siding with Christ we will lose entirely our name and honor as a person before others and will become an object of scorn and derision, of abuse and persecution. We fear, that through the confession of Christ, our dignity, personality, humanity will be injured and suffer loss.
