Constant Companion

I have gotten good at this. It is odd. I don’t enjoy it. I find it to be a pain, but I have gotten really good at this. We all have those talents that we never thought we would develop, but by the sheer number of times you do it, you get good at it. Here I am again, and I know what to do. I have done this so much lately, and I am good at it. What is it?

Safe and Secure from all Alarms

I love watching nature shows. When the BBC’s Planet Earth came out, it was an amazing gift. The number of times we would hear the words, “This is the first time this has ever been caught on camera” was astounding. Recently, I have started (albeit quite slowly) watching Netflix’s Our Planet. There are incredibly fascinating scenes and commentary. I have really enjoyed getting into it.

Who's your mother?

It seems there comes in a time in every PhD candidates life when they start working ridiculously long hours. I have hit that time in the program. I am trying to get my thesis written which means that I drop Calvin off at nursery in the morning, get into the office and stay there until around 30 minutes before he goes to bed so that I can get a little time with him before he is off to sleep. I don’t love the hours that I have to work right now to get this thesis done, but I know that it is important for my family and our future. This is especially true as we get closer to having Grace come home. The thesis needs to be done, so that when she comes home, I don’t have to worry about it anymore.

Increase and Decrease

Doing a PhD can get into your head. Sometimes I think that what I am doing is amazing. Other times I think that what I am doing isn't all that interesting, and I will be happy just to pass the viva at the end of all this. Pretty much every day is a rollercoaster of highs and lows. Pretty much everyday I am tempted to think that what I do will change the world. Pretty much everyday I am ready to give up and move on.

Family, Church, and Belonging

The one thing that has been hanging around in my head, however, from this paragraph is that Bavinck reminds us that we are promised these things "Yet even now, in this life...". It seems so strange to think about that. The fact that we promised these things in this life. But where in this life can we say that we have received these things?

Home Again Home Again

Last week I was writing about how I only had two more sleeps before I would be home. Today I sit in my living room writing this blog update. It is good to be home. I didn't realize how much I missed my family until that afternoon when I walked into the house and saw Taryn and Calvin. It was a precious moment.

Loving Where We Are

Taryn and I regularly look around and are so thankful and happy for this opportunity. The funny thing is, when we think about it, it can be hard to give the tangible reasons why we are thankful for living here specifically. I thought I would give a quick list of five reasons we love living here, and why we are thankful for the opportunity.

Outside Looking In

I remember the day we got on a plane and headed to Edinburgh. There was excitement, nervousness, tears, and anticipation. It was a whole new adventure. We had no clue what we were walking into. We were leaving behind friends, family, and a life that we had grown to love. All things considered, we were in a good place at that moment. And yet, we moved to Edinburgh.
